Shettima to Represent Nigeria at UNGA Following Tinubu's Leave

The Federal Government of Nigeria announced that President Bola Tinubu has mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria's delegation at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. This statement, made by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, was a response to comments from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a U.S.-based lobbying organization questioning Tinubu's absence.

Mohammed Idris accused Atiku of attempting to attribute false motives to the President's non-participation. He emphasized that Vice President Shettima would deliver Nigeria's national statement and engage in high-level meetings, representing the country's interests in areas such as peace, economic development, and international cooperation.

The minister clarified that Tinubu's absence was due to annual leave and that delegating the representation to Shettima was standard practice, not a sign of diminished diplomatic standing. He urged political figures to avoid speculation that could harm Nigeria's international reputation.
