Nigeria's Vice President Shettima to Lead UN Assembly Delegation

The federal government of Nigeria announced that the country will be fully represented at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Minister of Information and National Orientation Alhaji Mohammed Idris stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation during his annual leave.

Idris emphasized that this arrangement is standard and does not diminish Nigeria’s diplomatic standing. Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement and engage in high-level meetings with world leaders and international organizations.

Idris condemned political commentary from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a U.S.-based lobbying organization regarding President Tinubu’s absence, urging responsible discourse among political actors. He reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to its international relationships, particularly with the United States, and highlighted the importance of distinguishing verified information from speculation.

The minister assured that Nigeria’s interests will be vigorously advanced at the assembly.
