Nigeria Government Commits to Correctional Reforms

On Wednesday, the Nigerian government reiterated its commitment to improving the correctional system, enhancing border control technology, and promoting greater financial accountability across its institutions. Dr.

Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, the Minister of Interior, made this pledge during a meeting with Mallam Haruna Yahaya, the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), and his delegation in Abuja. Dr.

Tunji Ojo emphasized the government's responsibility to care for its citizens, even when their freedom is restricted, ensuring that custodial treatment is dignified and that inmates are given opportunities to reintegrate into society. He discussed the transition from the old prison act to the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, which aims to promote reform and reintegration.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of modern security architecture in border management and the need for improved financial management systems to prevent issues before they arise. He called for collaboration between the government and the private sector to enhance efficiency and investor confidence.
