Recommendations for Reforming Nigeria's Correctional Homes

On Tuesday, at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, participants convened to discuss the reform of Nigeria's correctional homes, highlighting critical issues such as overcrowding and prolonged pre-trial detention. The event, organized by the Ministry of Interior, brought together government officials, justice sector stakeholders, security agencies, and civil society organizations.

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, emphasized the need to establish a panel to guide deliberations and conduct a thorough assessment of the issues within the correctional system.

This panel, set to be inaugurated on November 24, 2024, will undertake a rigorous 16-month investigation into serious allegations, including corruption and human rights violations within correctional facilities. The recommendations from stakeholders included expanding non-custodial measures, improving access to justice, and enhancing the welfare of correctional personnel.

The event underscored the urgent need for reforms that align with international human rights standards and promote transparency and accountability within the correctional system.
