Nigeria Enhances Inmate Reintegration and Social Protection

The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, is intensifying collaborative efforts to improve inmate reintegration and social protection. Dr.

Bernard Doro, the Minister, highlighted the significance of the National Social Register, which currently identifies 19.7 million households across the country, as a critical tool for reaching vulnerable populations. During a visit from Mr.

Sylvest Ndidi Nwakuch, the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Doro reiterated the ministry's commitment to strengthening partnerships and ensuring that social intervention programs effectively target and support those in need. The ministry is implementing a poverty graduation framework designed to help beneficiaries achieve sustainable economic independence, which includes access to products, assets, business mentorship, and financial inclusion.

Doro emphasized the need for continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure long-term success and prevent beneficiaries from relapsing into poverty. The collaborative approach aims to enhance the welfare and rehabilitation of inmates and ensure they are not excluded from government interventions.
