FG Resumes Maiduguri-Monguno Road Rehab After Delay

The Federal Government of Nigeria has resumed the rehabilitation of the Maiduguri–Monguno road corridor after an eight-year delay attributed to significant security challenges in the area. Muhammad Ahmad, the Director of the Federal Ministry of Works, disclosed this during an inspection tour of the project on Wednesday in Maiduguri.

The road project was first awarded in 2018 but faced prolonged setbacks due to insecurity. The contract sum has increased from N21.7 billion to N28.35 billion, with funding sourced from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company under a tax credit scheme.

As of now, 5.85 kilometers of the road have been completed, leaving 24.15 kilometers outstanding. The project is only 5.46% complete, with a completion date set for June 10, 2028.

Salisu Adamu, the project manager, highlighted the challenges of transporting construction materials due to insecurity and called for special security arrangements involving the Nigerian military. Haruna Abdulkareem, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Borno State, emphasized the need for transparency in public funding.
