Fuel Subsidy Reinstatement Threatens Nigeria's Economic Gains

On August 24, 2026, Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, published an opinion article titled “Restoring Fuel Subsidy Will Reverse Nigeria’s Economic Gains.” He cautioned that reinstating fuel subsidies would lead Nigeria back to the economic conditions of 2022, characterized by fiscal pressures, fuel scarcity, and market distortions. Idris emphasized that the government would have to sacrifice funding for essential services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure to finance a renewed petrol subsidy.

He noted that Nigeria spent approximately $10 billion on petrol subsidies in 2022, amid declining oil production and weak government revenues. According to the Federal Government’s Nigeria’s Reform Scorecard, subsidy savings released ₦15.8 trillion to the Federation from June 2023 to December 2025, benefiting the Federal Government, states, and local governments.

Idris stated that this fiscal space allowed for increased investments in various sectors, including infrastructure and social initiatives, while also acknowledging ongoing electricity subsidies costing ₦3.14 trillion during the same period.
