Tinubu Government Rules Out Fuel Subsidy Return, Cites Economic Gains

Nigeria's government declared it will not reinstate fuel subsidies, saying removal of the policy since 2023 has prevented economic collapse and driven GDP…
Nigeria's government has permanently closed the door on restoring fuel subsidies, according to Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume. Speaking at the nation's 66th Independence Anniversary Lecture in Abuja on Wednesday, Akume stated that President Bola Tinubu's administration will not return to what he described as a damaging subsidy system that previously drained national resources.
Akume defended the subsidy removal as part of a broader reform package introduced since Tinubu took office in 2023. He argued that eliminating fuel subsidies, alongside reforms to the foreign exchange market and fiscal policy, was critical to keeping Nigeria's economy from deteriorating further.
Without these measures, Akume said, the nation would have faced imminent economic breakdown. The government official pointed to economic data to justify the painful policy shift.
According to Akume's remarks, Nigeria achieved real GDP growth of 4.2 percent in the first half of 2026, which he attributed to the reform agenda. The administration has also pursued significant infrastructure investments alongside these fiscal changes, Akume added.
Akume acknowledged that Nigerians have endured hardship from the reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies, which raised petrol prices substantially. He framed this sacrifice as necessary medicine for long-term economic stability.
The government's position suggests that regardless of public pressure or political opposition, the subsidy removal remains a fixed pillar of Tinubu's economic strategy.
