Nigeria Launches Guidelines for Hypertension Management

The Federal Government of Nigeria has rolled out policy guidelines focused on the early detection and management of hypertension, addressing the high incidence of sudden deaths attributed to the condition. Dr.

Malau M. Toma from the Federal Ministry of Health emphasized the importance of primary healthcare facilities in diagnosing and managing mild hypertension cases during a public awareness event in Abuja on World Hypertension Day, May 17, 2026.

The initiative promotes regular blood pressure checks, particularly for adults starting at age 18, and encourages individuals to visit primary healthcare centers at least once a month. Dr.

Suleiman Lamord, head of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, noted that hypertension can lead to severe health complications, including stroke and kidney failure. The program aims to equip healthcare workers and communities with knowledge to combat hypertension, supported by the World Bank, which has revitalized 9,000 primary healthcare facilities across Nigeria.

The initiative also seeks to dispel myths about hypertension and promote healthy lifestyles.
