Experts Warn of Rising Hypertension Cases in Nigeria

The Nigerian Hypertension Society has raised concerns about the increasing burden of hypertension in Nigeria, revealing that one in three adults is affected, with fewer than five patients achieving proper blood pressure control. In a statement issued ahead of World Hypertension Day on May 17, the society's president, Prof. Simeon Isezuo, described hypertension as a leading preventable cause of death and disability in Nigeria.

He noted that many patients remain unaware of their condition until severe complications arise, such as strokes and kidney failure. The society identified factors contributing to the hypertension crisis, including low awareness, late diagnosis, poverty, poor medication adherence, and unhealthy lifestyles.

They urged the government to subsidize essential drugs, expand health insurance coverage, and improve access to treatment. The society plans to conduct free blood pressure screenings and educational campaigns to promote awareness and encourage routine monitoring of health indicators.
