Nigeria Launches Free Data Initiative for Students

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a ₦180 billion annual zero-rated data initiative aimed at providing five million students with free access to approved digital learning platforms. Announced by Dr. Tunji Alausa on September 10, 2026, during the launch of the Initiative for Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content, the program will commence on October 1, 2026.

Eligible learners will receive 100 megabytes of sponsored data daily for educational content, allowing access to approved educational websites without incurring data charges. This initiative is developed in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and telecommunications operators, targeting students in public secondary and tertiary institutions initially.

Alongside this, the government plans to introduce regulations to enhance online safety for children under 16, with further details to be announced. The initiative aims to remove financial barriers to online learning and improve digital access while ensuring child protection online.
