Nigeria Eliminates Data Costs for Students' Education

The Nigerian government has launched the Initiative for Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content, aimed at eliminating data costs for students. This initiative, introduced by Minister of Education Dr Maruf Alausa, is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on making digital learning more accessible.

Alausa emphasized that this intervention seeks to ensure that factors such as poverty and location do not hinder access to quality education. He announced plans for regulated internet access for children under 16 to enhance online child protection.

Alausa noted that the initiative is part of the broader Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which includes the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure and the Digital Nigeria Education Management Information System. He called for collaboration among various stakeholders, including the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and telecommunications operators, to ensure the initiative's success.

Alausa reaffirmed the commitment to advancing educational opportunities and leveraging technology for a better learning environment in Nigeria.
