FG Launches Pilot Ranching Program in Five States

The Federal Government of Nigeria has identified five states—Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Adamawa—and the Federal Capital Territory for the pilot implementation of its National Ranching Policy. Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Maiha, announced this after briefing President Bola Tinubu on the ministry’s activities on Tuesday.

The pilot program will commence at the Wase Grazing Reserve in Plateau as a proof of concept for the new ranching model, aimed at reducing farmer-herder conflicts. Maiha stated that the selected areas have experienced significant conflicts due to the disappearance of grazing routes caused by farming and urbanization.

The policy encourages pastoralists to rear animals in designated locations, providing essential infrastructure such as housing, veterinary clinics, and schools. Additionally, the government is implementing a livestock identification program to combat cattle rustling and establish a national livestock database.

The initiative also promotes dairy development and modern veterinary services.
