Minister Joseph Tegbe Confirms No Electricity Tariff Hike

The Federal Government, through Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, has ruled out any plans to increase electricity tariffs, emphasizing a commitment to enhancing power supply and addressing the sector's challenges. During a media parley in Abuja on September 18, Tegbe, marking his first 100 days in office from June 8 to September 16, stated, “Let me categorically state, and this is not a political statement, we have no plan to increase electricity tariffs.” He outlined the government's focus on resolving financial and physical issues within the electricity sector rather than imposing additional costs on consumers.

Tegbe identified significant constraints across the electricity value chain, including limited gas supply due to damaged pipelines and commercial terms that deter investment. He noted that generation companies are receiving only 27 percent of their bills, impacting maintenance and gas supplier payments.

The minister also highlighted issues such as vandalism, ageing equipment, and high losses in electricity distribution, stressing the interconnectedness of these problems and the need for comprehensive solutions.
