Minister Tegbe Announces Focus on Power Supply, Metering

On September 17, Minister of Power Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe announced that the Federal Government will not implement an immediate electricity tariff hike, prioritizing improvements in power supply and nationwide metering instead. This announcement was made during the commissioning of a 3MW captive solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University, which was executed by the Rural Electrification Agency under Phase II of the Energising Programme.

The project features a 3.3MWp solar photovoltaic installation capable of delivering 3MW of AC power, supported by a 2MWh battery storage system. This initiative aims to reduce the university's reliance on diesel generators and enhance power stability for its approximately 58,726 students.

Additionally, 388 solar-powered street lights were installed on campus to improve safety. Tegbe emphasized that expanding metering would ensure consumers are billed accurately for their usage, addressing complaints about estimated billing and enhancing transparency in the electricity sector.
