FG, SSANU, NASU Negotiations Fail, Strike Continues

Negotiations between the Federal Government and the Joint Action Committee (JAC), which includes the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), ended in deadlock on Monday in Abuja. The talks, convened by Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, were adjourned to May 5 for further negotiations.

SSANU and NASU initiated an indefinite strike on April 30 after the expiration of a one-month ultimatum to the government regarding the renegotiation of a 2009 agreement. The unions are protesting the government's proposed 30% salary increase, insisting on a 40% adjustment as a minimum acceptable position.

SSANU President Mr. Moham Ibrahim stated that the strike is fully compliant nationwide, paralyzing administrative and essential services at universities. The strike has led to the postponement of examinations at the University of Maiduguri and disruptions in various university services, including clinics and hostels.
