Nigeria to Launch New Communication Satellites by 2029

The Federal Government of Nigeria has set a target for the launch of two new communication satellites, NigComSat 2A and NigComSat 2B, in 2028 and 2029, respectively. This initiative, disclosed by the Managing Director of Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited, Jane Egerton-Idehen, during the second Nigerian Satellite Week in Abuja, is part of efforts to strengthen security and expand digital connectivity.

The project is moving beyond the procurement stage, focusing on satellite design to enhance intelligence gathering and surveillance across Nigeria and its neighboring countries. The satellites are expected to provide real-time data collection and intelligence support for security agencies.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, emphasized that the satellite program is integral to the government's broader strategy to deepen digital infrastructure nationwide. The proposed budget for the NigComSat 2 project in the 2026 fiscal year is ₦420.97 million, reflecting a reduction from the previous year's allocation, but the project remains a priority for the government.
