Nigeria to Launch New Satellites for Security by 2029

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to launch two new communication satellites, NigComSat 2A and NigComSat 2B, in 2028 and 2029, respectively. This initiative, disclosed by the Managing Director of Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited, Jane Nkechi Egerton Idehen, is part of efforts to strengthen national security and expand digital connectivity.

The satellites are designed to enhance intelligence gathering, surveillance, and connectivity across Nigeria and its neighboring countries, particularly in support of security operations. The process for the implementation of these satellites is moving beyond the procurement stage, with a close tender expected soon.

The project is backed by a budgetary allocation of N420.97 million for the 2026 fiscal year, despite a reduction from the previous year's allocation. The initiative is part of a broader government strategy to deepen digital infrastructure nationwide, complement ongoing investments in fiber optic expansion, and improve internet capacity significantly.

The Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Shaibu, emphasized the importance of space technology in enhancing Nigeria's security architecture.
