NISO Demands Action from DisCos on Outstanding Debts

The Nigeria Independent System Operator (NISO) conducted a public hearing from September 1 to September 4, 2026, with the Nigerian Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to address their outstanding obligations to the Nigerian Electricity Market and service providers. NISO reviewed the DisCos' market obligations and payment arrangements, finding the proposals from some DisCos unacceptable due to the magnitude and age of the debts.

The hearing was led by a five-member committee chaired by Engr. Dr. Edmund Eje, Executive Director of Market Operations. The committee expressed concern over the proposed payment frameworks and highlighted that the Federal Government had previously netted off approximately 97 percent of the DisCos' obligations from 2015 to 2020.

NISO stressed the urgency for DisCos to liquidate their remaining balances and indicated that it would proceed with applicable sanctions as per Market Rules while ensuring constructive engagement and transparency.
