FG Warns GenCos of Disconnection Over Failure to Implement Free Governor Control

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), issued a warning to power generation companies (GenCos) regarding the implementation of Free Governor Control (FGC) across generating units. The FGC system enables turbine generators to automatically adjust output in response to grid frequency fluctuations, aiding in stabilizing electricity supply.

GenCos failing to activate FGC by November 30, 2025, risk heavy sanctions, including penalties of 10% of the affected generating unit's invoice value. NERC emphasized the importance of compliance to prevent grid disturbances, as evidenced by previous grid failures.

GenCos are required to install FGC systems and deploy Grade Level 5 meters by October 31, 2025, for monitoring by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).
