WAEC's Suleiman Kum Addresses Arbitrary Fee Increases

The Federal Ministry of Education is taking measures against schools that have arbitrarily increased examination fees for the 2027 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Suleiman Danlami Kum, the new Head of the National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), stated that the ministry is aware of schools charging candidates more than the official examination fee.
Kum, who succeeded Dr. Amos Dangut, emphasized that the ministry is actively working to address this issue. He noted that WAEC has not yet released entries for the upcoming examination.
During an inspection of the ongoing 2026 WASSCE for Private Candidates, Second Series, Kum reported that over 56,000 candidates registered nationwide, including 272 walk-in candidates. He expressed satisfaction with the examination's conduct, highlighting the effectiveness of computer-based testing (CBT) in enhancing examination integrity and reducing malpractice.
WAEC has implemented CBT since 2024 and continues to improve its processes.
