Nigeria's Livestock Ministry Trains Officers on HPAI Surveillance

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development commenced a training program for 62 Multi-sectoral Officers on Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) Surveillance in Wildlife and Wetlands, held over six days in Akwanga, Nasarawa state. Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, Dr. Samuel Anzaku, opened the training, which was organized in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, alongside Strengthening Infectious Disease Detection System (STRIDES).
The training's theme, “Strengthening Wildlife Disease Surveillance For Early Detection of HPAI,” aligns with Nigeria’s priorities in animal health, food security, and public health. Anzaku, represented by Dr. Alao Mitchell, National Programme Coordinator of the Avian Influenza Control Programme, noted that HPAI poses significant threats to poultry production and public health.
The training aims to enhance the capacity of officers to effectively detect and respond to HPAI threats, promoting coordination among institutions involved in wildlife, animal health, and public health.
