Nigeria Launches $500M SPIN Project for Food Security

On Tuesday, the Nigerian Federal Government unveiled the $500 million Sustainable Power Irrigation Nigeria (SPIN) project in Abuja, aimed at providing sustainable power for irrigation and enhancing dam safety. The initiative, led by Minister of Water Resources Joseph Utsev, is part of efforts to boost food security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability in Nigeria.

The project is designed to strengthen Nigeria's resilience against floods and droughts caused by climate variability. It aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing the urgent need to transform Nigeria's agricultural production system for reliable food access.

The SPIN project, backed by a World Bank financing package, targets the development of 500,000 hectares of irrigated farmland and is expected to generate 30 gigawatts of sustainable energy while improving the country's climate resilience. The project aims to increase food production, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth, particularly in rural communities.
