FG Launches Affordable Housing Scheme via Cooperatives

The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Sen. Dr.

Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, announced an affordable housing scheme through cooperative reform and digital finance at the 2026 Cooperative Housing Summit Africa held in Abuja. This initiative aims to revamp the Cooperative Reform Revamp Programme (CRRP) to enhance housing accessibility and economic inclusion.

The scheme will focus on various demographics, including women, youth, persons with disabilities, farmers, informal sector workers, rural communities, low-income earners, and vulnerable populations. Plans include establishing a cooperative bank to provide financial access for housing projects.

The initiative emphasizes the need for a robust digital infrastructure to improve transparency and financial management. Mr.

Hannatu Mershak, representing the Cooperative Federation of Nigeria, urged collaboration between government financial institutions and private investors to address Nigeria's housing shortage. The summit highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving affordable housing for low and middle-income earners.
