Nigeria Launches National Poverty Intelligence Lab

On Wednesday, the Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Poverty Reduction, unveiled the National Poverty Intelligence Lab (NPIL) in Abuja. Dr.

Bernard Doro, the Minister, stated that the NPIL aims to fast-track economic reforms, reduce poverty, and boost human capacity development. The initiative includes a three-day workshop organized in collaboration with Innovation for Poverty Action (IPA) to better understand the lab's instruments for tackling economic challenges linked to rising poverty in the country.

Recent estimates indicate that approximately 140 million Nigerians live below the poverty line, highlighting the urgent need for a systematic approach to poverty intelligence and humanitarian response. The NPIL is designed to provide analytical infrastructure to formulate policies, allocate resources, and manage interventions effectively, moving away from politically driven assumptions to data-driven decision-making.

Mr. Fumi Ayeni from IPA emphasized the importance of determining real poverty-related economic challenges to reduce duplicative interventions.
