Nigeria Updates Terrorism Sponsors List Amid Mass Trials

On April 11, 2026, the Federal Government of Nigeria released an updated list of 48 individuals and groups allegedly linked to terrorism financing, as published by the Nigeria Sanctions Committee. This development occurred alongside the mass trial of 227 terrorism suspects that began on Tuesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where security was heightened. Among the accused, Babagana Habeeb, a former senatorial candidate from Borno State, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for selling petrol to Boko Haram terrorists. Habeeb pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting terrorism, admitting to supplying petroleum products to insurgents operating in the northeast. His defense counsel, David Kasw, argued against leniency, emphasizing the support rendered to insurgents contributed to violence and displacement in communities. The presiding judge, Peter Lifu, noted that there was no evidence linking Habeeb to terrorist group membership. The court ordered Habeeb's sentence to commence from the date of his arrest and recommended rehabilitation.
