Nigeria Updates Terrorism Sponsors List Amid Mass Trials

On April 11, 2026, the Nigerian government released an updated list of individuals suspected of sponsoring terrorism, as published by the Nigeria Sanction Committee (NIGSAC). This development coincided with a mass trial of 227 suspects facing charges related to aiding and abetting terrorism, particularly in the northeastern region of Nigeria.

The trial began at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the suspects were heavily guarded by military and police intelligence. Among those sentenced was Babagana Habeeb, a former senatorial candidate from Borno, who received a 10-year prison term after pleading guilty to charges of supplying petrol to Boko Haram terrorists.

Habeeb's attorney, Lateef Fagbemi, emphasized the government's commitment to due process in handling terrorism-related cases. The court, presided over by Judge Peter Lifu, noted that there was no evidence linking Habeeb to terrorist group membership.

The updated list of alleged terrorism sponsors includes 48 names, reflecting the government's ongoing efforts to combat terrorism.
