INEC to Reveal Stance on Supreme Court Ruling Today
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will publicly announce its position regarding the Supreme Court judgement that affirmed the constitutionality of Sections 77(5), 77(6), and 77(7) of the Electoral Act 2026. This judgement also upheld INEC’s revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, confirmed on Tuesday that the commission received the certified true copy of the judgement and is currently reviewing it. Since the judgement was delivered on September 24, concerns have arisen about its implications, particularly for candidates who switched political parties after their former parties had begun nomination exercises.
Amupitan noted that INEC has received 112 formal complaints regarding the nomination process, resolving all but those pending in court. A meeting is scheduled for today to finalize INEC's stance, with a statement to be issued immediately afterward.
There is ongoing debate about INEC's authority to disqualify candidates based on the Supreme Court judgement.
