Police Alert Advocates for Investment Accountability Framework
The Federal Government has been urged to enforce an accountable investment framework that would enable Nigeria to secure productive capital while protecting public revenues. This call was made by the Civil Society Organisation, Police Alert, after the launch of the report titled “Investment Protection and Nigeria’s Energy Transition: Implications for Environmental Accountability and Regulatory Space” in Uyo.
The communique emphasized that Nigeria should evaluate foreign investments not only based on the capital attracted but also on the obligations created and the regulatory authority preserved. Tijah Bolton-Akpan, Executive Director of Police Alert, expressed concerns about Nigeria expanding potentially treaty-protected petroleum investments without adequately assessing their long-term implications for regulatory authority, public finances, and environmental accountability.
The organization recommended a complete investment treaty review, mandatory investment-risk assessments, improved transparency and fiscal accountability, strengthened National Assembly oversight, protection of environmental and community rights, and the establishment of independent monitoring.
