Nigerian Government Advocates AI Adoption in Universities

The Federal Government has called on Nigerian universities to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to improve the quality and global competitiveness of university education. This appeal was made by the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, during the opening of the 2026 retreat of the National Universities Commission (NUC) with vice-chancellors in Abuja.
The retreat, themed “Enhancing Regulatory Compliance, Governance, Leadership, and Partnership in the Nigerian University System,” aimed to address challenges in the sector. Ahmad highlighted the necessity for universities to review their policies in light of rapid changes in higher education driven by AI and digital learning.
She stressed the importance of safeguards on academic integrity and urged the development of institutional policies for AI application. The minister emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in university management and called for practical recommendations from the retreat.
The event took place on October 13 and 14 at the NUC headquarters.
