Nigerian Professors Call for AI Adoption and Regulation

At the 8th Lagos State University (LASU) Research and Innovation Fair, prominent academics underscored the necessity for Nigerian universities to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) while establishing regulations to mitigate irresponsible use. Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, highlighted AI's transformative potential in sectors like agriculture, healthcare, education, and energy.

He noted barriers to AI adoption in Nigeria, including inadequate digital infrastructure and ethical concerns. Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, argued against banning AI, emphasizing the need for regulations to ensure it serves as an assistive tool rather than a replacement for critical thinking.

She warned that over-reliance on AI could undermine essential educational skills. Outgoing LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, remarked that AI is reshaping knowledge production and economic competition, stressing the importance of shaping AI responsibly to address Nigeria's unique challenges.
