FG Warns Nigerians Against Illegal Foreign Army Recruitment

On February 15, 2026, the Federal Government of Nigeria warned citizens to avoid illegal recruitment by foreign armies, particularly in conflict situations. This warning was prompted by an increase in cases where Nigerians were allegedly deceived with promises of jobs and educational opportunities, leading them to combat roles abroad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern after the discovery of two Nigerian bodies in Luhansk, identified as Hamzat Kazeem Kolawole, 42, and Mbah Stephen Udoka, 38, who reportedly fought on the side of Russia in the ongoing war. Additionally, a Nigerian man, Abubakar Adamu, appealed for government assistance to return home from Russia, claiming he was lured by a security job offer and was forced to sign military enlistment documents without proper legal advice.

The government emphasized that participation in foreign conflicts without approval violates Nigerian law and warned against mercenary activities. Citizens were advised to verify travel and work opportunities through official government channels to avoid exploitation.
