Nigeria Warns Citizens Against Foreign Military Recruitment

The Nigerian government has issued a strong warning regarding the rising cases of citizens being recruited to fight in foreign wars. In a statement released in Abuja on Sunday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government expressed grave concern over reports of Nigerians being lured abroad with false promises of jobs and educational opportunities, only to find themselves coerced into military service in foreign conflict zones.

The ministry's spokesperson highlighted that victims were often pressured to sign military contracts without fully understanding the implications, with many contracts written in foreign languages. The government emphasized that joining foreign armed conflicts without approval could lead to serious legal consequences, including violations of Nigerian and international law.

The statement also referenced ongoing investigations into the recruitment of Nigerians in the context of the Russia-Ukraine war, where some individuals were allegedly recruited as security personnel. The Russian ambassador to Nigeria, Andrei Podyolyshev, denied any official involvement in recruiting Nigerians for combat, stating that no government support programs exist for such activities.
