FG Warns Security Personnel on Arms Diversion Risks

The Nigerian government, represented by Johnson Kokumo, a retired official, has issued a warning to security personnel regarding the diversion of official arms. During the inauguration of a capacity development program for arms management in Abuja, Kokumo highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by weak control systems that allow for significant portions of illegal arms to circulate, often originating from official stockpiles.

He stressed the importance of proper documentation and monitoring to prevent arms from falling into the hands of criminal groups and terrorists. The program, organized in collaboration with NCCSLaw and funded by the Kingdom of Netherlands, aims to equip personnel with modern skills in arms management through a three-phase training initiative.

The first phase focuses on practical skills in handling and documenting weapons, while subsequent phases will address leadership in stockpile management and adopt a train-the-trainer model to sustain institutional capacity within security agencies. Kokumo reaffirmed the commitment to curb illicit arms flow and strengthen control mechanisms.
