IGP Disu Orders Audit of Police Arms to Combat Crime

On April 28, 2023, the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, directed a comprehensive audit of arms and ammunition within the Nigeria Police Force to address the proliferation of illegal weapons. This initiative aims to enhance internal accountability and prevent the misuse of firearms.

Disu emphasized the importance of accurate inventory management and operational efficiency. During a meeting at the Peacekeeping Hall in Abuja, he reported that 280 suspects, including those involved in murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping, were arrested in April.

The police operations led to the recovery of 1,212 arms and ammunition and the rescue of 189 kidnapping victims. Disu instructed the Commissioner of Police to collaborate with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community organizations to improve intelligence gathering and operational responses.

He also stressed the need for regular town hall engagements to foster community trust and cooperation with the police.
