IGP Olatunji Disu Orders Audit of Police Arms and Ammunition

On April 25, 2023, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, directed a comprehensive audit of arms and ammunition within police formations to combat the proliferation of illegal weapons. This initiative is intended to renew efforts to strengthen internal accountability and ensure accurate inventory management to prevent misuse of firearms.

Disu emphasized the importance of collaboration with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community organizations to improve intelligence gathering and operational responses. He instructed the Commissioner of Police to conduct a thorough audit and document findings transparently, with reports to be submitted to police headquarters within a stipulated timeframe.

The IGP also reported that, during police operations in April, 280 suspects, including those involved in murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping, were arrested, and 1,212 arms and ammunition were recovered. He stressed the need for trust and cooperation between the police and the Nigerian people to enhance security.
