Nigerian Government Prioritizes Workers' Safety Over Profit, Launches Safe Workplace Initiative

The Nigerian government, represented by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has declared a firm stance against employers compromising workers' safety for profit. This commitment was emphasized during the unveiling of the Safe Workplace Intervention Project (SWIP) in Abuja.

The project, a collaboration between the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and the Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association (NECA), aims to enhance workplace safety practices and raise awareness of compliance with the Employee Compensation Act of 2010. The government highlighted the importance of accident prevention and ensuring compensation as a last resort.

NSITF's Managing Director, Oluwaseun Faley, stressed the need for proactive measures to prevent workplace accidents, shifting from reactive compensation to preventive strategies. The event also featured the distribution of health and safety materials and the launch of new ambulances in the northern region.

NECA's Director-General, Adewale Smart Oyerinde, emphasized the significance of fostering a safe and healthy work environment.
