FG Launches Land Reform for Affordable Housing Initiative

On July 16, 2026, Engr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, announced a land reform initiative by the Federal Government designed to enhance the delivery of affordable housing for low-income earners and informal workers across Nigeria.

This announcement was made during a side event at the 20th Africa International Housing Show held at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja. Darma emphasized that successful housing policies require an efficient, transparent, and secure land administration system.

He highlighted the Nigerian Land Title Registration Document Program (NLTRDP), which aims to expand land registration, improve tenure security, and modernize land administration systems to reduce transaction costs. The initiative seeks to unlock the economic value of land assets and improve access to housing finance.

Darma called for housing models that reflect the realities of low-income households and urged African governments to prioritize land administration reform as a central strategy for housing development.
