FIFA Rejects Italy's Replacement of Iran for World Cup

FIFA has officially rejected a proposal to substitute Iran with Italy in the upcoming World Cup, as reported by BBC. This proposal was partly aimed at easing tensions between Washington and Rome, following remarks from U.S.

Special Envoy Paolo Zampolli. FIFA President Gianni Infantino did not comment directly on the proposal but confirmed that the Iranian team would remain part of the tournament, which is set to take place from June 11 to July 11, 2023, across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Italy, represented by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, criticized the proposal, while the Italian national team, a four-time champion, will miss its third consecutive World Cup after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the playoffs last month. Iran's fixtures include matches against New Zealand and Belgium, with the tournament scheduled to kick off in Los Angeles and Seattle.

FIFA maintains the sole discretion over team withdrawals and replacements.
