FIFA Confirms Arthur Okonkwo's Switch to Nigeria

FIFA has officially confirmed the switch of goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo from England to Nigeria, allowing the 24-year-old Wrexham shot-stopper to represent the Super Eagles. The confirmation was documented on FIFA's association platform on April 6, 2026.

Okonkwo, born on September 9, 2001, in Camden, London, to Nigerian Igbo parents, began his career at Arsenal's academy and represented England at various youth levels from 2015 to 2019, including U15, U16, U17, and U18 teams. He has also featured for the senior England team.

Currently, Okonkwo is the first-choice goalkeeper for Wrexham in the EFL Championship following a permanent move from Arsenal, where he has impressed with consistent performances. His switch to Nigeria follows discussions with Super Eagles coach Eric Chell during the Unity Cup in London last year.

This move adds depth to Nigeria's goalkeeping options, which currently include Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye, especially ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
