FIFA Introduces "Challenge Card" Rule for VAR Review Ahead of World Cup

FIFA has implemented a new "Challenge Card" rule for VAR reviews in football, giving coaches the ability to request a review of referee decisions during the upcoming World Cup. The purple card system allows a limited number of challenges per team, with unsuccessful challenges resulting in forfeited cards.

The initiative aims to enhance fairness and accuracy in officiating, with the system already trialed in Italian football. Notably, Pierluigi Collina, chairman of FIFA's Referees Commission, piloted the system during the FIFA U20 World Cup matches involving teams like Morocco, Spain, and France.
