FIFA Delays Ruling on DR Congo Player Eligibility Dispute

FIFA is currently reviewing a dispute regarding the eligibility of players in the DR Congo national football team, which could significantly affect Nigeria's participation in the 2026 World Cup. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) raised concerns in December about the eligibility of Congolese players, citing local laws that prohibit dual citizenship.

This issue arose after DR Congo defeated Nigeria in a penalty shootout to progress in the intercontinental playoffs. NFF General Secretary Maham Sanusi stated that the Congolese side violated FIFA regulations, while the DR Congo Football Federation dismissed the protests as an attempt to win through backdoor means.

The outcome of FIFA's review is critical, as it could determine whether Nigeria, a bronze medallist in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, risks missing its second consecutive World Cup. The last time DR Congo appeared in the tournament was in 1974 when it competed as Zaire.
