INEC Chairman Succession: Southwest Candidates Emerge for Historic Appointment

The search for the first Southwest Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is underway as preferred candidates emerge. The current INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu's tenure is nearing its end, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expected to nominate his successor.

The appointment of the INEC Chairman is subject to Senate confirmation, as per the 1999 Constitution. Initially leaning towards a candidate from the Southwest, Tinubu has expanded the shortlist to include candidates from other geopolitical zones.

Notable contenders include Justice Abdullahi Mohammed Liman, Lai Olurode, Kenneth Ukeagu, Sam Olumekun, and Professor Bashiru Olamilekan.
