Five Ebola Survivors Discharged Amid Rising Cases in DRC

Five Ebola survivors, including a healthcare worker, were discharged from the Doctors Without Borders Ebola treatment center and the Ebola treatment center at Béni Hospital in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They received certificates confirming their recovery and expressed gratitude to the medical teams.

Despite this positive development, the Ebola outbreak has surpassed 6,000 cases, marking it as the fastest-growing outbreak in DRC history. Health authorities reported that the outbreak has resulted in numerous deaths and that over people have recovered.

The situation is complicated by insecurity, displacement, a health workers’ strike, and intense population movements. The World Health Organisation indicated that the outbreak is out of control and could surpass the West Africa Ebola outbreak, which was the deadliest on record.

Although the current outbreak was declared in mid-May, it is believed to have been spreading since February, affecting nearly 60 health zones, with most cases occurring outside monitored contacts.
