Nigerian Security Agencies Uncover 2004 Coup Plot to Overthrow President Obasanjo

In April 2004, Nigerian security agencies discovered a coup plot involving around 30 mid-rank military officers aiming to overthrow President Obasanjo's administration. The plan included shooting down Obasanjo's helicopter with a missile.

Several arrests were made, and four military officers were charged with treason, including Hamza Al Mustapha, a former head of security under late dictator Sani Abacha. The officers allegedly planned to assassinate Obasanjo and replace his government with a new regime.

The coup attempt led to a series of legal proceedings and heightened security concerns in Nigeria.
