Rivers State Community Faces Tragedy as Flooding Claims Lives
In the past three weeks, flooding in the Eneka community of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State, has resulted in the deaths of at least eight children, according to local residents. The flooding, attributed to several days of heavy rainfall, has submerged parts of the Port Harcourt metropolis.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara approved ₦200,000 for each of the 35 households identified as victims of the flooding. However, residents are urging the government to implement a lasting solution, as stagnant water continues to pose health risks.
Martin Okafor, Chairman of the Rumuchiorlu Farm Road Landlords and Residents Association, reported that many children died from drowning and snake bites. Another resident, Amarachukwu Onukwube, highlighted health issues among women and girls due to prolonged exposure to floodwater.
The community is calling for urgent government intervention to prevent further deaths and health complications.
