Flooding Threatens 5,000 Residents in Lagos Due to Canal Block

Residents of Ijora Badia in the Apapa Local Government Area of Lagos State face imminent displacement due to persistent flooding linked to a construction project by a pharmaceutical company. Approximately 5,000 people are at risk as flooding, which began around September 2025, has worsened, forcing families to abandon their homes.

Community member Raymond Tejujaiy reported that the construction site, situated on swampy land, has involved sand filling without adequate drainage measures, redirecting water flow and blocking nearby canals. Despite attempts by community leaders, including Sundai Aiyewumi, to engage with the company and seek government intervention, no action has been taken.

Business owners, such as Towolawi Ramson, express concern over the economic impact of stagnant water and blocked canals, which disrupt operations and create health risks. Community leaders, including Wasiu Onalapo, are appealing for state and federal intervention, including ecological funds, to address the situation, which experts warn could lead to large-scale displacement without proper environmental assessments.
