NEMA Activates Emergency Centre for 2026 Flood Preparedness

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has activated its National Emergency Operations Centre to improve coordination, monitoring, and response efforts for the 2026 flood season across Nigeria. This activation was announced by NEMA's Director-General, Zubaida Umar, during an inauguration at the NEMA Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

Umar urged officials to be diligent and proactive in their roles, emphasizing the importance of factual and timely information for effective decision-making regarding flooding and climate-induced disasters. The centre will serve as a hub for monitoring the flood situation, harmonizing information from various sources, and coordinating responses among stakeholders throughout the rainy season.

This initiative follows intensified flood preparedness activities by NEMA and other agencies, prompted by seasonal climate outlooks identifying several states at risk of flooding. The Federal Government is committed to proactive flood management, implementing control projects and strengthening disaster preparedness in high-risk areas to mitigate the impact of flooding on lives and livelihoods.
