Nigeria Activates Early Flood Response Platform

On Thursday, during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the anticipatory action task force (AATF) to activate a national coordination platform for early flood response. This initiative aims to enhance disaster response and preparedness as the rainy season intensifies across Nigeria.

Shettima instructed the immediate operationalization of the fusion trigger room concept within NEMA to coordinate flood monitoring and emergency response. He emphasized the need for relevant agencies to review budget lines and ensure the prompt release of approved resources for anticipatory actions, rather than waiting for disasters to occur.

The Vice President called for state governments to take ownership of flood preparedness efforts. Bernard Doro, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Poverty Alleviation, and Disaster Management, described the approval of funds for anticipatory flood action as timely, while Zubaida Umar, NEMA's Director General, noted that early warnings have already been issued to prioritize vulnerable communities.
