Nigeria Prepares for 2026 Flood Risks with NEMA Action

Nigeria is preparing for significant flood risks in 2026, as the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has identified 14,118 communities across 266 Local Government Areas in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory as being at high risk of flooding. An additional 15,597 communities in 405 LGAs across 35 states are categorized as moderate-risk, while 923 communities in 77 LGAs across 24 states are expected to experience minimal flooding.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected an early-to-normal onset of rainfall and normal-to-above-normal rainfall amounts for the season. In response, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), under the leadership of Director General Mrs. Zubaida Umar, is focusing on translating these forecasts into practical risk management measures.

This includes activating the Fusion and Trigger Room concept, as directed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, to enhance coordination and trigger early action when flood risks reach critical thresholds.
